Gallery TS1 is Middlesbrough Town Centre’s commercial gallery. I’m sure you will have heard of MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art), and that’s the gallery which looks to a particular aspect of the contemporary scene (Teesside’s equivalent to Tyneside’s Baltic), but few know about Gallery TS1. The gallery/shop offers a wide range of locally-made art and crafts – such as jewellery, woodcraft, ceramics, handmade textile goods, glass art, sculpture, photography, paintings, prints and greetings cards – for varied tastes.
Gallery TS1 occasionally also provides a platform for singer-songwriters to showcase their talent at exhibition openings (this is a year-long programme with details posted regularly at Facebook.com/Galleryts1) and are always looking for artists to play, so do get in touch via the aforementioned Facebook link.
Their 2018 programme of exhibitions begins with Lebanese artist, Nadine YammineAjaka, showing her paintings and glass painted art. Her show runs until Saturday 17th February, before the Cleveland Art Society’s ‘Spring 2018 Exhibition’ goes up.
The Cleveland Art Society is an art group that incorporates artists from County Durham to North Yorkshire and regularly stages group shows at many of the main museums, galleries and community exhibition spaces within Teesside’s catchment. They’ve rested from their big summer exhibition last year at Stokesley Town Hall where they enjoyed musical accompaniment to their opening evening from folk duo, The Maughans, who will perform at the Great North Folk Festival later this year. The Maughans were, of course, friends of the legendary Vin Garbutt and paid tribute to the great man with their songs.
This year’s Cleveland Art Society ‘Spring 2018 Exhibition’ will include a mix of sculpture, very attractive small glass art, paintings and drawings and, for a local audience, is well worth a visit. Their launch evening will be held on Thursday 22nd February between 7.00pm and 9.00pm.
