21 years on from its masterful debut UK performance in London’s West End, Yasmina Reza’s multi-award-winning comedy, ‘ART’, returns to the stage this spring for a star-studded UK and Ireland tour, promising a captivating rendition of one of the most successful comedies ever written.
Premiered at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in the heart of Paris in 1994, ‘ART’ explores the confines of friendship amongst three life-long friends – Serge, Marc and Yvan – as they begin to question each other’s impression of art after Serge purchases a rather expensive and dubious painting.
‘ART’ assembles an all-star cast featuring acclaimed actor Nigel Havers playing the role of Serge. Most notably recognised for his formidable performance in the Academy Award-winning film ‘Chariots of Fire’, Havers earned a BAFTA nomination for his role as Lord Andrew Lindsay and has over the years accumulated a number of theatre credits in such productions as ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ and ‘Rebecca’.
Denis Lawson (Bleak House) and Stockton born actor Stephen Tompkinson (DCI Banks) take on the roles of Marc and Yvan, two of Serge’s closest friends. With over 20 theatre credits to his name and the 1983 Olivier Award for Best Actor for his role in the musical ‘Mr. Cinders’, Lawson is no stranger to the stage and is sure to conduct a charismatic performance to marvel over.
For Tompkinson, also a seasoned stage performer, a return to the North East beckons as he performs only 30 miles from his birthplace of Stockton-On-Tees where he lived with his family until a relocation to Scarborough aged 4.
‘ART’ runs at Newcastle Theatre Royal from Monday 5th – Saturday 10th March with tickets starting from £14.50. Tickets are available to purchase from the Box Office on 08448 11 21 21 and are also available online at theatreroyal.co.uk/whats-on/art.
