WERBENIUK + INDEPENDENT STATE OF MIND + SAM SLATCHER
Werbeniuk are a band from Teesside in the North-East of England. Not easily pigeon-holed, their “Teesside World Music” combines percussion, electronics and catchy vocals with a political conscience and a strong sense of fun.
The band currently features Michael Baines, Gary Doyle, Andy Mellor, Tim Oxnard and Darren Reay. Formed in March 2010, as a three-piece comprising Michael, Andy, and Simon Kelly, the line-up soon expanded when Gary joined along with Jimmy Howes. Gigging regularly since June 2011, the band released their first CD “Avenge My Death” in December 2012. Simon left the band to pursue other interests in the summer of 2013, so Martin Cass stepped in, and they carried on regardless. Martin decided to call it a day in the Spring of 2016, and Jimmy took a break shortly after.
They released “One of Us Did”, their second CD of scathing political anthems and biting social commentary in January 2016. A lot happened to Werbeniuk in the years between the albums, both as a band and personally, so it’s no surprise that “One of Us Did” is even more grumpy than the first album…if that’s possible!
The band are a well-established part of the Teesside music scene. Their instrument-swapping and the general on-stage chaos has arguably made them the region’s premier Health & Safety risk, but certainly one of the best and most original live acts around.
