Known for their engaging electro-pop and immense stage presence, Newcastle-based progressive synth-rock trio Twist Helix consists of Spanish-born synth player and vocalist Bea Garcia, drummer James Walker and their recent addition, bassist Matthew Barron (previously of Casual Threats).
After touring the UK scene extensively over the past few years, Twist Helix was quick to generate critical success and have been championed by BBC Introducing as well as Radio 3 of Madrid, Spain. Here at NE Volume, we are huge fans of the Tyneside-based trio and have even included the band as one of our top 10 regional acts active on the UK touring circuit today!
I spoke to the band regarding the forthcoming release of their highly-anticipated album, ‘Ouseburn’, and here’s what they had to say: “The ‘Ouseburn’ album is our most significant release to date and its story (told from the point of view of an artist) is in some ways our own. The album’s central theme, that a place and a people can reinvent themselves through creative works, makes ‘Ouseburn’ not just the story of Newcastle, or of the North East, but of Modern Britain – what it is and what it could become.”
Written in Newcastle and recorded in Spain, ‘Ouseburn’ – which is set to be released via Madrid’s Paul Black Music – has been said to soar with a futuristic atmosphere, combining infectious pop hooks, striking synths and distinctive lead vocals to create something truly thought-provoking and bold.
Each track on this eclectic concept album weaves lyrical themes that present a social commentary of the changing landscape of Newcastle, their hometown, and its post-industrial reinvention as a creative hub.
Remaining true to their Tyneside roots, Twist Helix has announced the location of their album launch to be held in early October as Ouseburn Valley’s beloved music venue, The Cluny. Taken from the LP are previously released singles, ‘Ouseburn’, ‘Little Buildings’ and ‘Pulse’ which are available to stream via soundcloud.com/twisthelix.
Twist Helix release their upcoming album ‘Ouseburn’ on Friday 5th October at their official album launch hosted at the Cluny 2, Newcastle. Advance tickets are priced at £5.50 (including booking fee) and are available to purchase online at thecluny.com.
