The Sitting Room is Guisborough opened in June 2017 and is the second Sitting Room in the area, with the original owners setting up a small gallery and cafe in Saltburn-by-the-Sea. The vision for a second premises came when Ruth and Ainsley Callaghan joined forces with the Mitchells to create a bigger venue with the capacity for more events.
Speaking to The Sitting Room co-owner Ruth Callaghan, she spoke of the establishment with a great tone of pride: “We’ve managed to do so many of the things we set out to do in our first year. We have Charley, our events coordinator, with a brilliant background in running events at the Empire in Middlesbrough and Ten Feet Tall. So, with her help, we’ve had six music gigs including national touring acts such as Pete Fij and Terry Bickers and Scottish singer-songwriter, Daniel Meade. There’s a really great local music scene and we’re excited to be offering local talent a new platform.”
The Sitting Room is a fairly small and cosy venue with a seated capacity of just 45, allowing for intimate performances that encapsulate all in attendance. “It’s great to have people sitting having a pizza and a few cocktails whilst listening to some great music. The bar can be hired for private parties and we love to be able to give people the space to create an event unique to them. We’re pretty good and putting a great playlist together too,” said owner, Ruth.

I also spoke to Charley Archer, the Assistant Manager and Events Manager of The Sitting Room, to talk about how things have been going and her plans for the future: “I was immediately on board with many ideas on what we could do to establish The Sitting Room as a venue for multiple types of events and not just a bar. We have had many successful events what have brought fantastic music talent to Guisborough, especially touring bands that have also played the likes of cities such as Glasgow & Coventry. As events coordinator, I’m always looking for upcoming musicians and like to pair acts that have different sounds to create an interesting gig in an intimate venue. I have many upcoming things in the pipeline, including branching into comedy.”
All events are advertised through The Sitting Room’s social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram, so be sure to follow the venue to keep up-to-date with any future events.
