Teesside band Nel Unlit have just released their new single, ‘Unhung’, and have been working with Peter and David Brewis of Field Music, so Jack Dodsworth caught up with the band to find out more.
What can you tell us about your latest single, ‘Unhung’? What can fans expect from this upcoming track?
‘Unhung’ is the second single we’ve released and we’re really excited about it. Like our debut single, ‘True Things’, it will feature on our album which we aim to release early next year. The album will be called ‘Wake for the Dreaming’ and is a concept album based on the graphic novel, “Worlds’ End” by Neil Gaiman. The book features a group of strangers sat in an inn after being stranded in a storm and sitting around a table telling stories to pass the time. I guess people can expect storytelling and plenty of drama. Also, there will be a cast of singers each playing a character in the story so look out for some local heroes and some cameos from our Spooker Rekkids friends in there.
So what’s this latest single about, lyrically?
‘Unhung’ tells the story of a hangman who is the best in the business because he was picked from a line-up of folks waiting to be hung and offered the job as a stay of execution. As soon as he is too old and ill to do the job anymore, the sheriff’s men come to take him away to be hung. He asks his family to tie his noose around his waist and hoist him up so that he can pretend he is well and send the men away. He dies that night in his bed surrounded by his family.
You’ve been working with Peter and David Brewis of Field Music, so how did that happen?
I applied for the residency Peter and David were hosting for Brighter Sound (a great music charity who are doing lots of incredible things) along with nine other lovely and extraordinarily talented musicians. We spent a week in Peter and David’s studio in Sunderland writing and recording music (and somehow finding the time to have lots of fun and take a culinary world tour along the way) and by the end, we came out with 10 brilliant tracks. The track I came out with is ‘Unhung’. We’re hoping to put the tracks together onto an album and maybe play a launch show too which would be mega. Peter and David are heroes of mine so I was pretty star struck going in but they are such lovely, warm blokes that I was disarmed immediately and just had a brilliant, brilliant week!
To newcomers/new readers, could you explain your album/single within 3 words?
Hmmm, three words is a fun challenge. I’d say “storytelling to music” sums it up pretty well.
Any other future plans that fans can eagerly await like future gigs and so on?
Yes, we have some shows booked in which we can’t wait for. Wed 14th Feb: The Mad Hatter, Oxford.
Thur 15th Feb: Old Cinema Laundrette, Durham (supporting Martin Stevenson). Sat 17th Feb: ARC, Stockton (supporting Harri Endersby). Sun 25th Feb: Korks, Otley. Sun 15th April: Surf Cafe, Tynemouth.
Also, we will be working closely with our Spooker Rekkids friends this year and have lots of exciting things planned.
Lastly, where can people find you? And what’s the best platform to listen to your music?
We can be found on our website (nelunlit.com), Bandcamp (nelunlit.bandcamp.com) and Facebook (Facebook.com/nelunlit) and Twitter (twitter.com/nelunlit). ‘True Things’ is available on Spotify and Apple Music as will ‘Unhung’ when it lands.
