If you like your guitarists innovative, genre-spanning and downright prolific, you’d be well-advised to pop along to The Cluny this month to catch ‘An Evening with Gary Lucas’.
To date, Gary has released over 30 solo albums in a variety of genres including jazz, rock, folk and blues and he’s collaborated with Jeff Buckley, Captain Beefheart, Lou Reed and Nick Cave – he has even performed before the General Assembly of the UN.
This latest UK tour will see the virtuoso guitarist offering something more than a live music masterclass, however. To add to the experience, Gary will offer insight into his working life by projecting rare archival footage of his work with Buckley and Beefheart, playing unreleased tracks and discussing his career and writing in depth, as well as the usual masterful guitar work.
I wish, dear reader, I could tell you where to start with Gary’s music to prepare you for seeing him live in a few weeks. The truth, however, is that his back catalogue is so vast and his output so varied that this is an impossible feat to attempt – if you’re already aware of his work, you know you’re in for a treat and, if you’re not, then take a chance on this critically-acclaimed guitarist and prepare for a Saturday night to remember.
Gary Lucas’ new solo album, ‘Pori Boy Long Way from Home’, will be released very soon, and he will perform at The Cluny in Newcastle on Saturday 5th May. Advance tickets, priced at £14.00 in advance (plus booking fee), are available from thecluny.com.
