A homecoming of sorts for this North Yorkshire Moors-based band, Avalanche Party have demonstrated their status as one of the most hotly tipped local acts, gaining new fans from their powerful stage shows and masses of radio play including being championed by BBC Introducing, Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, 6Music’s Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson, Vic Galloway at BBC Scotland, John Kennedy at Radio X, Edith Bowman at Virgin Radio, Jim Gellatly, Amazing Radio and KCRW’s Jason Kramer in the USA.
Avalanche Party describe their gigs as: “Intense and immediate, so new yet so familiar and brimming with an urgency that explodes off the stage like the front lines of a war you didn’t even realise was being fought.”
Their rip-roaring live shows, blasting out their original slice of feral garage punk, have gained the band a real reputation and put them very high on the list of must-see North East acts; often shirtless, singer Jordan Bell’s haunting voice, over the bands’ powerful fuzz-fuelled guitar licks, create a unique and unforgettable audio experience.
The band has had a whirlwind of a year, gracing stages all over the UK and Europe including The Reading & Leeds festivals and most recently performing in November at festivals in Manchester and Glasgow.
With such a busy gigging schedule it’s amazing that the band has also had time to get into the studio to record new material. Avalanche Party’s October release, ‘Million Dollar Man’, recorded at Young Thugs Studio in York with Jonny Hooker, is a real tour de force and is set to be a key component in their future live performances. In previous gigs this year the band has kicked off with fan favourite ‘I’m So Wet’ – and I’m sure it will take pride of place in this set.
The Cluny gig will finish off a triumphant year for the Avalanche Party lads. And if previous shows are anything to go by, the venue will be packed to the rafters and jammed to the ceiling with energy and charisma.
Even in the depths of the Newcastle winter, I’m sure the Cluny will be cooking on gas mark 10 for this event.
Avalanche Party play The Cluny, Newcastle on Saturday 15th December. Tickets, priced at £9.00 plus booking fee, are available from thecluny.com. Doors open at 19:00.
