The Westgarth Social Club in Middlesbrough will be struck by legends from the West on Friday 11th May as American soul and R&B vocalist, Barrence Whitfield, will be soaring through alongside The Savages to perform the wildest, loudest and insane sounds.
Florida-born and New-Jersey raised, Whitfield’s roots in music was in gospel, however, this soon changed as he blessed local New-Jersey rock and funk bands in the 70s with his vocals. It was from this background that, upon working in a record shop during high school, his vocals came to the attention of a specific member of The Lyres: Peter Greenberg.
Whitfield teamed up with Peter Greenberg and former members of The Lyres to form Barrence Whitfield and The Savages.
The band has a vivid reputation for their crazy and explosive stage performance which John Dougan describes best as being: “Raucous and rough from the onset.”
Backing Whitfield are the best cornermen in the business. Peter Greenberg is the lead garage/punk guitarist after his legendary stint with the Lyres, and he is known for working his guitar as a chain saw, sculpting a masterpiece. His sidekick Phil ‘Mr. Tenacious’ Lenker is the Savage that plays the bass and does so synonymously with drummer, Andy Jody. And, like a foghorn through the mist, comes Tom Quartulli’s saxophone rips.
Supporting acts on the night come in the form of The Snakerattlers, The Milk Lizards and Oilbirds.
Barrence Whitfield and the Savages, along with supporting acts, will appear at Westgarth Social Club in Middlesbrough on Friday 11th May.
