Legendary soul and R&B artist, Candi Staton, is flying in especially from the US for what’s set to be a New Year’s Eve party like no other. The star will be heading to the North East for an exclusive one-night-only performance at the Sage, Gateshead on Sunday 31st December.
Candi Staton was born in Hanceville, Alabama and started her professional career at the tender age of 12 where she sang alongside such greats as Sam Cook and Aretha Franklin. This was the beginning of a journey that would see her nominated for five Grammy awards and inducted into three different Halls of Fame throughout her colourful music career.
The ‘first lady of southern soul’ began her solo career back in 1968 and has gone on to release a commendable 29 albums over the past 45 years. Some of her most famous material includes floor-fillers such as ‘Young Hearts Run Free’ and ‘You Got The Love’, which saw her return to the mainstream charts in 1991 after her collaboration with The Source. The club-style dance hit, ‘You Got The Love’, sold over 2 million copies and is considered as a seminal classic of that era.
Ticket holders will also witness the spectacle of the House Gospel Choir who will be accompanying Candi. The choir merges outstanding singers with DJs, live keyboards, bass and drums to create an atmosphere and a sound that will raise the roof and is sure to get the audience dancing.
