Riverside Rebellion is back once more with the fourth instalment of Teesside’s punk celebration hosted at Middlesbrough’s Westgarth Social Club on Saturday 25th August. And this year’s event will welcome The Drones – one of the UK’s initial punk bands – as the headline act.
There is a strong North East contingent featuring in this year’s festival, including Peterlee’s Uproar who was part of the original UK/DK82 second wave of punk. Uproar originally sprang to prominence in 1982/3, recording three 7” singles and an album. They supported Penetration in Stockton last December.
Alongside Uproar, Teesside’s very own vintage punks The Filth and No Way are set to join Manchester’s Dead Objectives, Sunderland’s Kickback Generation as well as up-and-coming bands such as York’s Part Time Miserables and Stockton’s US Hardcore-influenced Weld.
Riverside Rebellion 2018 headliners, The Drones, arose from Manchester in 1974 as a glam-rock outfit under the name Rockslide, releasing a lone single ‘Jump Bump Boogaloo’ in October 1975. Along with the Buzzcocks and Slaughter & The Dogs, they were part of the original punk movement.
After relocating to London, The Drones became one of the first bands to play the legendary Roxy Club and they went on to support such seminal bands as The Chelsea, The Vibrators and X-Ray Spex. Later that year, they also supported The Stranglers on a full UK tour and appeared on two influential early punk compilation albums including ‘Streets’ and ‘Short Circuit: Live at the Electric Circus’. Their debut EP, ‘Temptations of A White Collar Worker’ (1977), was described by one critic as: “classic dole-queue punk.”
In October 1977, their second single, ‘Just Wanna Be Myself’ / ‘Bone Idol’, was released, and on 6th December they recorded a session at Maida Vale 4 studio for John Peel. Later that month, they released their debut album on Valer Records, ‘Further Temptations’, which was produced by Simon Humphrey and is now regarded by many as a punk classic.
Riverside Rebellion 4 takes place at Westgarth Social Club, Middlesbrough on Saturday 25th August with doors opening at 16:00. Advance tickets are priced at £10.00 per person or £15.00 on the door.
