Around twenty years ago, the Bad Plus and Esbjorn Svensson’s EST, on either side of the Atlantic, broke through to a wide audience with music that took anthemic tunes and built them from quiet beginnings to high-intensity workouts.
The Daniel Karlsson Trio, who come to the Jazz Café in Newcastle on Friday 28th September, ticks several of the same boxes as EST. Like EST, they are from Sweden and their compositions are underpinned by strong rhythmic vamps – and none of the three musicians dominates proceedings as the dynamics between them are brilliantly balanced.
But what marks them out from the pack is the imagination in everything they do: from tunes that subtly blend influences from classical and folk as well as jazz to improvisations – individually and collectively – that veer off in unexpected directions without a cliché in sight.
Tickets, priced at £8.00 in advance (£6.00 concessions), are available from the Jazz Café, Reflex Records and ents24.com.
