Back in November 2016, they played one of the best gigs of the year at Northumbria Students’ Union and this year The Front Bottoms are back as they gear up to play a highly-anticipated show at Newcastle’s O2 Academy.
The Front Bottoms are the brainchild of frontman, vocalist, guitarist and lyricist Brian Sella who is joined by childhood friend Matthew Uychich (drums) and Tom Warren (guitar). Formed in New Jersey in 2006, they embraced the true DIY spirit of punk by self-releasing their debut album, ‘I Hate My Friends’ in 2008.
The band toured relentlessly up and down the East Coast of America before Sella took a hiatus to concentrate on his college education. Never ones to take themselves too seriously – their record label begged the band to change their name but Sella refused – things got a little more serious when they reconvened and signed to New Jersey-based indie label, Bar/None Records.
They released two records for Bar/None – the eponymous ‘The Front Bottoms’ in 2011 and ‘Talon Of The Hawk’ in 2013 – before signing with Fueled By Ramen and releasing’ Back On Top’ in 2015 and last year’s ‘Going Grey’.
Far from going grey themselves, the band play the kind of life-affirming joyous pop-punk made so popular by the likes of emo kings Jimmy Eat World and Blink 182. Their lyrics are bittersweet and humorous, with acerbic jibes one minute and tenderly romantic notions the next.
At Northumbria, the mosh pit grew until the entire room was jumping as one. And with support from Australia’s The Smith Street Band and New Jersey’s Brick & Mortar, it promises to be a great night.
The Front Bottoms play 02 Academy, Newcastle on Sunday 11th February. Tickets, priced at £19.20 (including booking fee), are available from seetickets.com.
