There are not many bands that you could see live at The Westgarth Social Club in Middlesbrough that have the history and reputation of The Godfathers.
In their first incarnation in the mid-1980s, established by brothers Peter and Chris Coyne, The Godfathers toured extensively in the UK, Europe and the USA – and it was in the states where they gained their biggest commercial success.
Their 1988 single ‘Birth, School, Work, Death’ made it into the Billboard Top 40, back when these things really mattered in both status and bank balance. This achievement gave the band sell-out tours and massive popularity in the colleges and universities of America.
Rather than being in the mainstream though, The Godfathers’ mob-inspired image and rock ‘n’ roll-style guitars set them apart from other bands of the era whose clean-cut sound and shiny production values put off many of the more punk-influenced listeners.
After numerous tours, three albums with Epic Records and another two with German label Interchord, the band decided to hang up their sharp suits and take a break in 2000.
Fast forward to 2008 and The Godfathers came back from the dead with a vengeance, releasing a remastered and vastly expanded version of their debut album ‘Hit by Hit’ and embarking on tours in Europe and the US – they even revived their infamous Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre shows to massive fanfare and the enjoyment of fans old and new.
The band truly now have classic status as influencers, with many new punk and rock bands covering seminal classics like ‘This Damn Nation’, and they were even cited by Mars Volta as a heavy influence on their album, ‘Noctournique’.
Most recently the band released their album, ‘A Big Bad Beautiful Noise’ in 2017 to critical acclaim and have since been a regular fixture on the gig and festival circuit across Europe.
This event brings a unique opportunity to catch this band without having to travel halfway across the globe and not only relive the glory days but celebrate the continued success of this unique act.
The Godfathers play at the Westgarth Social Club in Middlesbrough on Friday 8th Feb. Tickets, priced at £13.75 in advance (including booking fee), are available from seetickets.com.
