Calling all fans of classic British indie – The Wedding Present are stopping in at the O2 Academy in Newcastle on their latest UK tour, along with some special guests.
The Leeds-based band are celebrating 30 years since the release of ‘Tommy’ – no, nothing to do with that pinball-based Who opera, instead it was their first collection of singles, b-sides and radio sessions from the era before their debut album, ‘George Best’. It captures all of the bright, break-neck energy of their earliest work – a mix of beautifully jangly indie pop with a twist of frantic post-punk noise and bittersweet, love-tangled lyrics like in songs ‘My Favourite Dress’ and ‘(The Moment Before) Everything Spoiled Again’.
The Wedding Present were always a band that broke away from the straightjacket of genre expectations – breaking through on the C86 mixtape scene, but also performing solid Peel sessions of traditional Ukrainian folk music, and at one point releasing a new Top 30 single every month for a year (something neither Elvis or Ed Sheeran have managed).
To quote John Peel’s immortal review: “‘The boy [David] Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the rock ‘n’ roll era. You may dispute this but I’m right and you’re wrong!”
The Wedding Present heads to 02 Academy, Newcastle on Friday 8th June.
Tickets are currently available from the O2 Academy or the online ticket vendor of your choice (so long as your Google search for Wedding Present doesn’t bring up an endless selection of matrimonial John Lewis gift registries…though you could always treat the happy couple to set of gig tickets instead of the usual overpriced toaster. I know what I’d prefer).
