The first wave of acts has been revealed for the fifth annual Twisterella Festival in Middlesbrough, with the likes of Estrons, Avalanche Party and Boy Azooga leading the way in a line-up boasting a huge selection of the brightest and best emerging talent.
Designed to showcase the finest new national and international acts, as well as give a platform to a select number of local and regional bands who are ready to make the step up, this year’s Twisterella takes place on Saturday 13th October at venues across the heart of Middlesbrough.

The 1,000 capacity, multi-venue metropolitan music festival is centred around the Linthorpe Road and Southfield Road area of Middlesbrough, utilising established venues such as Teesside University Students’ Union, The Townhouse, TSOne and The Westgarth Social Club, along with secret pop-up sessions in some of the town’s coolest bars in nearby Baker Street and Bedford Street.
Launched in 2014, the first four Twisterellas have seen such luminaries as Fickle Friends, Clean Cut Kid, Spring King, Dream Wife, PINS, Eliza and the Bear, Black Honey, Prides, Fatherson, Cattle & Cane, Neon Waltz, Menace Beach, Outlya, LIFE, Beach Baby, Frankie & The Heartstrings, Jake Isaac, Du Blonde, WHITE, Sweet Baboo and Skinny Girl Diet, amongst others, performing to rapturous crowds.
Festival co-promoter Henry Carden said: “We are passionate about presenting Middlesbrough as a confident and forward-thinking town that is very much at the cutting edge for showcasing the best new music. We’re incredibly proud to have created a sustainable event that has become a firm fixture on the UK’s inner-city festival calendar.”
The team behind Twisterella have a long history of attracting breaking acts to the region, having previously secured local shows from the likes of Mumford & Sons, Wolf Alice, Alt-J, The 1975, The Vaccines, James Bay, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Palma Violets, Frank Turner, First Aid Kit, Daughter, Pulled Apart By Horses, Drenge, Keaton Henson, VANT, Temples, The Amazons and many more earlier in their careers.
Nominated in the best ‘New Festival On The Block‘ category in the AIF Festival Congress Awards, both Henry and Andy are also regular nominees in the ‘Indie Promoter Of The Year (Local Impact)‘ category in Live UK’s annual Live Music Business Awards. Furthermore, Carr was nominated for the prestigious Indie Champion Award in the AIM Awards 2017.
