Remember 20 years ago? Remember movies like Pulp Fiction, bands like Sublime and everybody wearing huge flannel shirts? Newcastle-based five-piece Kahuna remembers.
Forgive the sardonicism, but the dramatic influx of revivalist culture can be grating at times. If you turn on the radio, you’ll hear The 1975 channeling INXS. If you turn on the telly, sorry, your preferential streaming service, you’ll see Stranger Things aping John Carpenter classics.
Thankfully, it’s not all bad. ‘Throw’ is Kahuna’s new single and despite borrowing from their old favourites like everybody else, the song feels somewhat refreshing. It’s an upbeat ska-punk jam in a world of misfortune and mood. It’s actually a lot of fun. It’s not perfect – the vocals could use some harmony to avoid the risk of dryness on repeated listens – but thank God for something taking itself a little less seriously.
