From the first drum rolls and swelling spacey riffs, Lava Frog’s ‘In The Air’ builds to a mass of disorienting vapours and psychedelic-layered calls, rolling behind the powerful lead vocals of Gary Cass.
After these melodic highs and lows, Lava Frog hurtle full force into ‘Repeat’, which kicks up the tempo and sees high cries turn to screams for Cass.
‘In The Air’ resembles the well weaved progressive rock of A Perfect Circle while ‘Repeat’ is more akin to the thickly knitted guitars of Muse’s recent output. But in spite of such contemporary comparisons, Lava Frog’s sound still evokes something more classic and crisp.
While lyrically dark, dystopian and isolating, what makes these tracks truly shine is the richly meshed guitars of Mark Charlton, bassist Martin Stephenson and Jake Clark’s drums. A perfectly balanced quartet, Lava Frog has honed an absorbing and intriguing niche between classic and current psychedelia to great effect with this exceptionally well-produced couplet.
