Heaton-based outfit Alice Street have been on a strong run recently, with a string of shows under their belt and an appearance on the BBC Introducing Stage at Stockton Calling. I had the chance to sit down and listen to their fourth release, ‘Liquid Gold’, ahead of launch – and I must say, it is a fun one.
The band blends ska, punk, hip-hop and rock into an energetic, anthemic burst of sound that is bound to electrify anyone who catches them live. Despite this ambitious fusion of genres, ‘Liquid Gold’ shifts between styles and motifs with impressive ease, making the band difficult to categorise – but that is very much part of the appeal.
This track feels like the start of something significant for Alice Street. It carries the sense of a band on the verge of breaking through, ready to push on to bigger things. It is the kind of song that declares, “Here we are – let’s party,” and it is hard not to accept the invitation.
Alice Street are quite possibly the best thing to come out of Heaton since Chas Chandler.
You can listen to the release now on all major streaming platforms.
