Imagine my startled shock when mysterious signals appeared in the night sky, announcing the arrival of their latest single, ‘Change’. Operation Bonsai describe this musical offering to humanity as an “uplifting anthem about growth, embracing uncertainty and moving forward with hope”. So, without further ado, let Operation Bonsai commence.
I am immediately struck by the sheer funkiness of the track. It’s as smooth, glossy and polished as a mysterious aircraft gliding over the Yorkshire moors. The production is immaculate, with handclap-heavy percussion and intricate guitar parts making the whole thing irresistibly infectious.
“Don’t worry now. Everything is gonna be fine,” a soulful, ambiguous voice reassures me before the funk-fuelled chorus reaches a euphoric peak.
Operation Bonsai, who have also attracted attention from BBC Introducing North East, sound like an electro-pop, disco-soul supernova with a hint of Daft Punk-inspired energy. Overall, it is an enjoyably unexpected and wonderfully bonkers experience.
