Newcastle indie-rockers The Avelons have been relentlessly building a fresh sound since their first release in 2021. The four-piece have long prided themselves on infectious hooks and anthemic songwriting, with nods to The Enemy, The View and The Stone Roses. What they do best is captivate audiences with explosive performances, their gigs carrying a frenetic energy that whips the crowd into another realm.
Unashamedly rock ’n’ roll, The Avelons continue to develop their unique sound with their latest release. Their previously released track, ‘The Gallows’, drew comparisons with Dire Straits and Sam Fender, combining dominant guitar riffs with haunting vocals. In contrast, ‘Alice (On the Comeback)’ is a beefier, chant-driven anthem that has quickly become a live favourite since its release in August.
Describing their sound as “jangly indie rock”, the lads have recently finished a string of headline gigs throughout the North East, playing increasingly larger venues along the way. Always greeted by a feisty crowd, the blend of new faces and time-served fans is inspirational to the band. Frontman Jack tells me it blows his mind to see audiences singing his lyrics back at him.
“When you’re playing to full rooms like The Little Buildings, everyone is up close and you can see the whites of their eyes. It does make you feel incredible. It’s great to be able to share our new music with the fans too, and we’re excited for what is to come for The Avelons. Having a run of merch available at these gigs is a huge moment for any band; just seeing people wearing your name is massive.”
A festival favourite, The Avelons have earned slots at Isle of Wight, Y Not and Stockton Calling, most recently playing Coastfest. They were one of the lucky bands to perform their set before a thunderstorm forced the festival to close.
Forging a clear path through an increasingly saturated indie scene, The Avelons stand out through their originality, songwriting and on-stage chemistry. Their cheeky spirit carries beyond the studio as they continue to push their sound forward through the endless wave of landfill-indie revivalists circling the scene.
‘Alice (On the Comeback)’ is a hopeful track, written for their nearest and dearest, driving them through losing streaks and sending a clear message of triumph against the odds. Stream it on all platforms and follow The Avelons on social media for the latest news.
