Contemporary printmaking takes centre stage this autumn as Lino North arrives at The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle from 11th September to 29th November.
Bringing together 16 artists from across the North of England, Wales and Scotland, the exhibition celebrates the versatility and enduring appeal of linocut printmaking. Using the same essential materials – a carved lino block, ink, paper and pressure – each artist produces distinctive works that demonstrate a remarkable variety of styles, techniques and creative approaches.
Linocut is a printmaking process in which artists carve a design into a sheet of linoleum before applying ink and pressing it onto paper. Some artists use the traditional reduction method, carving and printing a single block in successive stages to build layers of colour and detail. Others work with multiple blocks to create richly textured compositions. Whatever the approach, every cut into the lino is permanent, making each decision an integral part of the finished image and showcasing the precision, craftsmanship and planning involved.
Drawing also plays a key role throughout the exhibition, with many of the featured works retaining the energy and spontaneity of the artist’s original mark-making. Alongside the exhibition, visitors can enjoy a programme of artist talks and live demonstrations, offering valuable insight into the techniques and creative processes behind original linocut prints.
