Two different art forms, two different artists, united by a shared inspiration: honouring the natural world through their creations.
Nature Up North will showcase artwork by Donna Slyfield, whose paintings capture hazy, naturalistic scenes of organic beauty. The artist hopes to “capture a profound connection with the natural world, based on emotional responses that promote health and wellbeing.”
The restorative power of nature is a profound thing, and Slyfield’s landscapes reflect this beautifully. Created with obvious reverence, her paintings lovingly portray the dramatic beauty of the natural environment. Originally from Hurworth, near Darlington, Slyfield paints both seascapes and landscapes, carefully capturing the raw splendour of the North’s rugged coastline and countryside. All of the artwork on display will be available to purchase during the event.
Alongside Slyfield’s paintings, visitors can also enjoy hand-built stoneware ceramics by Carol Metcalfe. Each piece is finished using sustainable plant ash glazes, which Metcalfe creates herself using natural techniques and materials gathered from her garden and farm near Richmond, North Yorkshire. Having studied Arts & Design at the University of Sunderland, Metcalfe draws constant inspiration from the landscapes that surround her and from her deep appreciation of the natural world. Her commitment to sustainability extends beyond her materials, with each ceramic piece fired in a kiln powered by renewable energy generated by a wind turbine.
Whether you are looking to browse for inspiration, admire beautiful craftsmanship, or purchase a unique piece of art, Nature Up North promises something special for every visitor.
