Tyne Theatre & Opera House in Newcastle presents ‘Keep Standing Up!’ on Sunday 8th March, a stand-up comedy gala in aid of Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland. Performed on International Women’s Day, this marks the fourth annual iteration of the event.
The highly worthy evening will be hosted by Geordie comic and actor Sammy Dobson, a natural choice with a decade-long pedigree of performing stage comedy across Tyneside. The bill is otherwise packed with an exciting line-up of largely regional acts, promising excellent value thanks to its generous running time.
Rising County Durham star Elaine Robertson is expected to be a highlight, the multidisciplinary artist already attracting acclaim and awards while honing her advanced craft. North-East stand-up Anja Atkinson and emerging talent Fran Best will also feature, alongside performers including Lauren Stone, Kelly Rickard and Sam Mayes. Even then, this barely scratches the surface, with a fast-paced evening of laughs guaranteed. Perhaps the most immersive and intriguing slot will come from the performer known only as Zoe.
The event is a positive exercise in celebrating female comedy at all stages, from burgeoning talent to unapologetically established acts. While the cause itself is exceptionally commendable, the show also provides a chance to experience some of the area’s most exciting comedians in a brilliant local venue. ‘Keep Standing Up!’ is as much a celebration of comedy as it is a testament to community, empowerment and the vital work of supporting survivors.
Tickets, priced from £8.50 in advance, are available at tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk.
