Comedian Paul Smith will grace the Sunderland Empire and Billingham’s Forum Theatre in September on his ‘Changed’ tour, playing Sunderland in between no less than eight gigs across four dates at Billingham. When last in Billingham in 2019, he joked that he had never heard of the place until days prior, so it is fantastic to see the town feature so prominently on this tour schedule.
The breakout star of Liverpool’s Hot Water Comedy Club is a unique, incredibly watchable talent, as anyone who has ventured down a rabbit hole of his YouTube output will attest.
His addictive style incorporates superbly observed tales, but the greatest hilarity and astonishment lies in his audience participation and razor-wire improvisational abilities.
Despite his cheeky, everyman persona, his rapid-fire, unscripted work is anything but common and has marked him out as a shoo-in for comedy superstardom on the UK scene. Front-row dwellers can certainly expect to be in the thick of the action.
Appropriately (and confusingly) titled ‘Changed’, the tour will prove that the pandemic has been but a brief interregnum to Smith’s rise.
