After waiting two years for the Off The Telly tour to be actualised, the Newcastle crowd poured into the venue with an energy that will inevitably not be matched by the veteran grump.
Notoriously pissed off at a litany of life’s minute eccentricities, the comedian has built a reputation for sarcastically dismantling the banalest issues – and tonight is little exception.
Undeniably, the Jack Dee experience was provided, as he rambled his way through a disapproving perspective on a myriad of subjects, yet it was difficult to overlook the disparaging and often facetious way Dee addressed the newer generation and his own ageing.
With many of his routines feeling stuck in a bygone generation, his routines focusing on smashed avocado, vaping and Greta Thunberg seemed ham-fisted and lazy.
Although still often funny, the slick cynicism that established Dee seemed dangerously close to eroding into a generic rubble of criticism that couldn’t help but feel worryingly close to ‘boomer humour.’
