Genre: Mystery
Spinning off of the well-established Sherlock Holmes media titan, Enola Holmes hopes to get an elbow in with a safe, uninteresting adaptation of the lesser-known sister figure to the world’s greatest detective.
Up-and-coming Netflix star Millie Bobby Brown stars in the titular role, a solid performance by an actor who will inevitably go onto bigger and hopefully better projects.
Her constant fourth wall breaks are an annoyance; the tongue-in-cheek approach from Harry Bradbeer sits uncomfortably. It blurs the line between taking its core mystery seriously and an ineffective spin on an otherwise controllable narrative.
Supporting performances from the likes of Henry Cavill and Fiona Show don’t help proceedings either as roles like this feel rather wasted on established names. They don’t offer much. There is no silver lining.
It’s no mystery as to why Enola Holmes is such a flop – merely look to the man in the director’s chair.
