Magic is just light-hearted escapism, isn’t it? Well, try telling that to rival magicians Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Christian Bale).
Set in 19th century London, The Prestige follows the pair’s journey as they compete for status and recognition, risking everything they have in the pursuit of delivering the greatest illusion.
Both lead actors bring their A-game. And with a supporting ensemble of Sir Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson and David Bowie (yes, that David Bowie), the film has an abundance of talent at its disposal.
It’s dark and moody in tone – very different from many people’s preconceived ideas about magic – but like any magician worth his salt, it leaves the audience open-mouthed and full of questions.
Repeat viewings only serve to consolidate the film’s intricacies as, being aware of the final twist, it means viewers can delve deeper into the mystery of Christopher Nolan’s magic trick.
