The Lit and Phil Library is Newcastle’s best-hidden gem. Sadly, along with many others, it has been closed due to coronavirus. Despite this unexpected closure, however, it has been able to create a new virtual replacement.
For over two centuries, The Lit and Phil has been around, yet this is the first time it has had to close its doors to the world. Being the largest independent library outside of London, many would be lost without it. Thankfully, in replacement, they have been able to provide their catalogue of books and music and have also created competitions and games that have allowed them to “reopen” as a virtual library.
Along with the virtual library, the Lit & Phil have also created a new blog which features articles of both fact and fiction over an abundance of topics, from punctuality and faires to bats. These articles are provided with the hope “to inform, entertain and possibly amuse you, offering at least some distraction from the current crisis” – and based on the comments, they do. The articles have been submitted by anyone who wants to, meaning you could contribute yourself.
Normally busy with a range of concerts and events, or being a place available for room hire, the funding has begun to dwindle. By offering these virtual resources to members, they can provide for the public. It is not expected, but if you can, they ask in return a mere donation of either £5.00 or £10.00.
