Written by proud Northumbrian Annie Davison, Bairns is a sharp, heartfelt one-woman dramedy coming to Alphabetti Theatre on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th July.
Annie is the co-director of Flash in the Pan Theatre, and this marks her solo debut. Now back from London, she’s bringing the piece home to the North East before taking it to the Pleasance Courtyard for Edinburgh Fringe 2025.
The play follows Lottie, a twenty-something who impulsively agrees to become a surrogate for her sister Freya and brother-in-law. Constantly tired and unable to fit into her clothes, Lottie begins to form an unexpected attachment to the baby she’s carrying. As the pregnancy progresses, she embarks on a complex emotional journey – after all, the child is legally hers until the papers are signed… right?
Blending stand-up comedy with theatrical storytelling, Bairns explores sisterhood, selflessness, and the blurred lines between familial duty and personal desire. Praised as “consistently laugh-out-loud funny” and “deliciously cutting”, Bairns is a tender, stretch-marked exploration of modern womanhood and the ties that bind.
Tickets, priced from £15.00 in advance, are available at alphabettitheatre.co.uk.
