Following the success of their fairytale trilogy – Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin and Snow White -balletLORENT returns with a magical new production, premiering at Northern Stage in Newcastle from Thursday 29th October until Sunday 1st November.
This fresh take on the classic tale combines imaginative storytelling, striking visuals and original dance theatre. Featuring nine professional dancers alongside a young community cast, Hansel & Gretel and the Witch promises energy, wonder, humour and plenty of theatrical delight.
The fairytale has been retold for balletLORENT by former Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and is narrated by actor Gina McKee, bringing wit, warmth and a touch of darkness to this much-loved story.
Step into a mysterious world of dark woods, an alluring sugar-glass house, an ‘all-you-
can-eat’ merry-go-round, a regenerating witch and even two giant chickens.
Directed and choreographed by Liv Lorent, the production features a new set design by Mayou Trikerioti, alongside returning balletLORENT collaborators: composer Murray Gold, lighting designer Malcolm Rippeth and costume designer Nazir Mazhar.
With its blend of dance, storytelling, music and theatrical invention, Hansel & Gretel and the Witch offers a fresh and deliciously dark take on a classic fairytale, making it an ideal introduction to dance theatre for younger audiences while retaining plenty to entertain adults.
