Indie-pop outfit Komparrison head to Middlesbrough Empire this month for a night of upbeat Britpop-inspired live music.
Komparrison started out as a two-piece acoustic duo with Elise Harrison on vocals and Kaitlyn Kempen on vocals and guitar; the Komparrison name was a combination of Harrison and Kempen’s last names and has stuck ever since.
They eventually developed their line-up to a five-piece band, with Jessica Chilton, Ellie Neill and Elliot Smith (not to be confused with American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith) joining the group. The band perfectly fit together, celebrating their individuality while complementing each other as a group and looking great on stage.
Their debut single, ‘Dancing with Demons’, was released in 2021 and showcased their indie feel-good pop side, gaining plays on BBC Introducing and allowing the band to gain gigs with the likes of renowned promoters, This Feeling.
Their four-track EP, ‘You Say She’s Satisfied’, shows the band’s sound developing, adding heavier aspects of rock, smidgens of punk and British guitar music. Frontwoman Elise added: “There are so many genres, so why not utilise them all? Why not try and use every bit of music we like?”
‘You Say She’s Satisfied’ showed the band’s passion for storytelling through their music, with Kaitlyn emphasising that: “The EP is not like turning a page in a book; each song is an individual story in its own right. You have to listen to the whole thing to grasp us.”
The band seek to give northern women a voice and through their music, share experiences that other women can relate to.
The EP is available on vinyl too thanks to North East Company, Press On vinyl.
This year, they have released their highly successful single, ‘He Doesn’t Get It’, which has a Britpop feel to it of the likes of Echobelly and James. And their commitment has earned the band airplay on BBC Radio 6Music and Radio X.
Komparrison have been grafting relentlessly, driving up and down the country and playing some amazing shows, supporting acts such as Futureheads, Walt Disco, Martha Hill and The Lottery Winners. They have become one of the most popular North East acts around.
It will be great to have them back on Teesside at this not-to-be-missed show.
Tickets, priced at £8.00 in advance, are available from fatsoma.com.
