Leeds five-piece rock band, VENUS, are emerging onto the music scene promoting not only rock and punk bangers but also a powerful message highlighting women in alternative music: “Women are NOT a novelty, trend or object in the music industry. We want to be a voice for minorities and an outlet for people to enjoy our music and have a good time!”
VENUS radiates positive energy of feminism and activism through hard-hitting rock and punk-influenced music.
The outfit will be performing at the first ever Hartlepool Live where they will be gracing the Town Hall stage at 3:20pm on Saturday 15th June.
Grace from the band stated she’s: “Over the moon to be playing as I’m from Hartlepool. I’m excited to be part of something which is so good for Hartlepool and the North East. I am looking forward to the ones that follow too.”
VENUS kicked off 2019 with the release of their debut single entitled, ‘Deranged’. The space-rock influenced single defends the role of women in the world and is utilised as a vent for the band to vocalise their: “anger towards the treatment of women not only in the music industry but also in day to day life.”
The band have spoken about the message behind their debut single: “We’re often branded as ‘psychos’ or ‘angry feminists’ so I guess we are playing on the word ‘deranged’ in that sense. Being all women in a male-dominated environment, people reduce our success down to gender…’they only get gigs because they’re girls’. Being in a girl band you want so badly to be labelled as being in a ‘band’ because music should not be gender restrictive. We also want people to become empowered when they hear our lyrics and thrash riffs; we tried to write so it belonged in an area that made you angry but in a motivational and positively empowering way. This is to anyone who told us we couldn’t do this because we damn well are – and so can you!”
In terms of feeling any pressure in the industry being an all-girl band and trying to spread a message of feminism, the outfit added: “We just want people to take us seriously, enjoy our music and spread the message of equality whilst doing so.”
If you want to feel inspired by high-energy music and a passionate band then you should catch VENUS’ set at Hartlepool Live on Saturday 15th June. Tickets for Hartlepool Live, priced at £15.00 (second wave) or £18.00 (third wave), are available from destinationhartlepool.com.
