Teesside singer-songwriter Niamh Casey is preparing to release her debut single so Lee Allcock caught up with her to speak about her inspirations, lockdown and more.
Can you tell our readers a bit about your sound/your lyrical inspirations…?
The music I write is for the indie/pop market. I levitated towards this genre as I noticed a gap in the market for female artists. My lyrical inspiration comes from experiences that have happened to me over my teenage years and I take relationships, heartache, love and loss and put them into songs. I try and put my emotions into my songs to show people how I am feeling or how I was feeling at the time. I want people to relate to my music. I am un-explaining reality.
So you’ve just released your first single in ‘Leave’. For those of our readers who haven’t heard it just yet, can you tell them a bit about it?
‘Leave’ is my debut single. I wrote the song when I was 15 years old about a relationship that was not good for me yet I still wanted to stay. I finally decided to release it 5 years later. It was recorded at Broadwater Studio’s in Gateshead by Paul Worthington and is available on all popular streaming platforms such as Apple Music and Spotify etc.
What are you doing to occupy your time, musically, during the lockdown?
The lockdown has actually been quite good for me musically. I have managed to write nine new songs and I am constantly trying out new genres and arrangements to make my music different. As well as writing my own songs, I have also taken time to learn some of my favourite songs from popular artists. I have also been trying to improve my skills on my other instruments; I have recently been getting more into bass guitar (hopefully, I will have a funky bass line for one of my new songs).
And finally, what are your aims for 2020 once lockdown is over?
Once the lockdown is over I aim to get straight back into the studio and record more of my songs. I want to release an EP in September/October time as I have recently written some new songs that I am really proud of. I aim to do some more gigs in local pubs and just keep on creating music as it’s what I love to do.
