As North East singer-songwriter Patrick Gosling unveils his new single, ‘Good Measure’, Lee Allcock caught up with Patrick to speak about recording in his spare room and more.
Tell me a bit about yourself including your experiences in music…
I’m Patrick Gosling, a singer-songwriter from South Shields. I’ve been bringing out tunes as a solo artist for the last three years and have been lucky enough to gig quite a bit, including some shows outside the North East.
You have a brand new single out. What can listeners expect?
I’m a big fan of ‘80s guitar pop, including the likes of The Cars and Crowded House, and this tune is my attempt and capturing that sort of vibe. I think the track sounds like it would fit nicely in a John Hughes movie. Lyrically, the song is just about checking yourself before going fully in on a love interest; I think people can relate to that, sometimes coming across as a bit too keen.
What did you learn during the writing and recording processes?
Since the start of my career, I’ve always played 90% of all the instruments. So in terms of that side of things, nothing much has changed. But this time, it being purely 100% me at the helm of recording and mixing, it’s been a strange but fulfilling process. I’ve quite enjoyed listening to the same snare drum for hours whilst mixing.
And you’re releasing an EP too. Tell me more…
The EP was recorded between the spare bedroom at my house, my practice room and The Bunker in Sunderland. The biggest thing I’ve learnt from it all is that you don’t necessarily need to go into fancy studios to record; as long as you have a SM57 and a Condenser mic you’re laughing really. The tunes on the EP capture everything that Patrick Gosling is about: there are highs and lows, loud and quiet parts.
And finally, if you could go to dinner with any musician, dead or alive, who would that be? And what would you discuss?
I’d probably go for Paul McCartney as he’s one of my idols. I’m not entirely sure what we would discuss as I feel I’d be a bit too overwhelmed with the whole thing. But if I was able to string some words together, I’d probably discuss songwriting with him as I feel like for songwriting advice you can’t really go any further than him – he is the greatest songwriter of all time after all.
You can listen to ‘Good Measure’ now on all major streaming platforms.
