North East-based 18-year-old twin sisters, Twayn, have had a busy year with the release of seven singles. Finishing off the year in style with the release of their excellent EP, ‘Cupid Isn’t Real’, the plan is to move into 2024 with huge enthusiasm and momentum. Damian Robinson caught up with Hannah and Grace to find out more.
Congratulations on all of your releases this year. It must be some work-rate you’ve got?
Thanks. We built up a huge number of songs over lockdown, something around about 97. All of the songs weren’t finished but we really wanted to pick out the best ones and get around to producing them and releasing them.
Did you save a particular batch of songs back for the new EP? The songs sound like they have a collective theme?
We did, yes. These songs are mostly newer songs but there is a theme about relationships which we felt fitted together really well. We wanted to put something together that was a collection of where we are at the moment and which helped us move forward.
The EP sounds great. Do these songs have a new style of songwriting than your past releases?
Probably, yes. Whereas the earlier releases were mostly collections from around lockdown, these are newer ideas – and we feel we’re better songwriters now. We really believe that if you practice at something you get better – and we write as often as we can.
So this is a natural progression for your songwriting in that sense?
It is. We can see new ideas and themes in our music. That’s partly as we try to write about where we are in our lives and so as things change, those ideas become the focus of our music. As we practice, we also try to develop our production style, so there’s a growth in both sides of what we do.
So do you have another batch of 97 songs to work through?
Not quite, but we do write often and we do have ideas already for the start of 2024, so we plan to keep practising and working hard and getting better and better. The new material we’re working on though, we’re really proud of.
And do you have plans to do live launches of the EP?
We’re doing a show in London at the end of the year, but we’re certainly looking to do more live shows in 2024, especially in the North East, so keep an eye out for new music and new shows.
The debut EP from Twayn, ‘Cupid Isn’t Real’, is out now and is available to stream on all major streaming platforms.
