Scotland has Mogwai, Canada has Godspeed! You Black Emperor and Iceland has Sigur Ros – and America’s answer is Explosions in the Sky who, as part of the second wave of post-rock, are now on a par with those aforementioned heavyweights.
Their combination of delicate atmospherics and dense, bombastic heaviness create a cathartic and emotionally charged live experience, ebbing and flowing from gentle, peaceful passages to ear-splittingly loud high-gain freakouts. As an instrumental band, there’s something deeply personal about Explosions in the Sky which leaves the listener in charge of how they interpret each piece.
They perform at Newcastle’s Boilershop on Wednesday 14th August.
Tickets, priced at £33.00 in advance, are available from boilershop.net.
