Newcastle-via-Brussels alt-popster Cherry Blur delivers with her third single, ‘Sweet Treat’ – a sugar-coated gem that never becomes sickly.
From the get-go, there’s a charming scrappiness as the track opens with bouncy verses, drenched in glossy synth and cheeky innuendo.
Cherry’s gravel-toned voice soon gives way to a gorgeous trill that elevates the chant-like chorus, and just when you think you’ve got the formula figured out, she swerves into a surprise call-and-response section full of theatrical flair.
A self-harmonised refrain and psychedelic breakdown bring pure musical whiplash – in the best possible way – before a final crashing chorus practically begs to be sung at the top of your lungs.
Originally sparked during lockdown and revived from an old recording, Cherry manages to balance sincerity with a sense of fun, never taking herself too seriously while still crafting the kind of earworm pop song that sounds like it’s been doused in neon and spun like candyfloss.
It’s quirky, confident, and endlessly listenable – ‘Sweet Treat’ is exactly that: a delicious, hook-filled delight.
You can listen to the track now on all major streaming platforms.
