Cherry Head, Cherry Heart is a distinctive and highly talented duo, with Naomi Lowe bringing you her beautiful vocal cords and Andy Johnson adding his subtle voice to the mix while laying out the incredible layers of musical instruments and production.
‘Keep on Moving’ is a great introduction to this album as it shows you an insight into their memorable songwriting.
‘Asteroids’ sounds like Blondies’ ‘Atomic’ put through a space arcade game, with Muse’s ‘Knights of Cydonia’ popping their spaceship across the screen and Catatonia taking the controller occasional. It is a space-pop masterpiece with its memorable chorus and blasts of synth rocket sounds popping in perfectly.
‘Home Sweet Home’ is a combination of Chvrches with The Beautiful south and shows a more mellow side to them.
‘Flickerbook’ is a unique piece of electronic pop: it has the infusion of The Human League and their silky smooth voices perfectly match.
‘Lovely Boy’ has a country theme to it with the combination of guitar and piano bringing an organic, classical rawness to the song.
‘Just a Second’ sounds like a Japanese pop song that you would hear on Mario Kart with its crazy, colourful effects – and it’s insanely catchy and happy throughout.
‘Sweetness’ has a great rock ’n’ roll retro vibe to it and has a glimpse of The Carpenters re-vamp for the 21st century, while taking you back to the 50’s when you could Jive with your friends.
‘It’s Complicated’ has the smooth talking of Lilly Allen with some glam electro 80’s undertones that resonate through the short, subtle warm electronics and sharp cutting effects.
‘Pattaya’ is driven by a summer-filled funky bass, accompanied by a jazzy piano and finished off by fuelled-filled disco beats; this is a tune that will have you dancing along and is perfect for those long summers’ drives to festivals.
‘Beware Young Lovers’ shows a more authentic and live sound to their music and is a lovely closing track to end the album.
Overall, I’m amazed by the recording quality of this album. This is a band doing it right, with songwriting at the heart of their work.
