Having already made a splash on the scene, Middle Management’s new single ‘Do We Have Anything Left To Say’ is the latest sneak peek into their forthcoming EP ‘Detail Death’, and it’s a catch-all of everything eccentric.
From the second the lingering synth entwines with kick drum thunder and an outlandish twang of bass, the track evokes the intrigue of stepping into a haunted house. At the same time, the spacey hit of that initial guitar riff and layered vocals are captivating enough to keep us moving forward. What prevails is a pop masterpiece with feet firmly planted across musical generations and a keen eye (or ear) somewhere far in the future.
Although at first listen it strongly vibes with the ’80s, there are also nods to the ’60s and ’70s with fuzzy guitar solos and discotheque bass thwacks. Vocally, it bounces from Carl’s idiosyncratic bellow, reminiscent of David Byrne, to Simone’s songbird trill, which itself isn’t bereft of quirk, all interlaced with spotless harmonies. Lyrically, it’s snappy, with a chorus and refrain that demands a singalong.
In short, it’s a delight.
