Have you heard of Moss? Not the kind that refuses to grow on a rolling stone, but the Darlington duo making dark, intelligent trip-hop with impressive live vocals and gritty guitars.
The project is a collaboration between singer-songwriter Oiu Bee, whose vocals carry a timeless chanteuse-like glamour, and multi-instrumentalist Mossope.
Both have been making music individually for some time, but together they form a synergistic partnership that has already led to live performances across the North East and the growth of a dedicated fanbase.
Moss recently released their third single, ‘Opener’. A departure from their more sultry earlier material, it is notably wilder, faster and altogether more feral. The intro feels reminiscent of boss-battle music from a 1990s computer game – energising yet unsettling.
From there, the track erupts into heavy guitar, forceful and almost incantatory vocals, distortion and raw punk energy. It is an excellent example of the duo’s experimental approach and willingness to push their sound into harsher territory without losing identity.
