Sunjay’s tenth studio album, ‘Split The Sheets’, is a collection of covers, but there’s nothing particularly nostalgic about it. Instead, he puts his own stamp on these songs, jumping between Americana, country, blues and rock ’n’ roll with impressive ease.
‘That’s Love’ sets things off with the lovely jangle of Americana pop before its drawn-out guitar solo takes things somewhere closer to dive-bar country. Sunjay’s vocals are meltingly beautiful, but still have that unmistakable twang.
There’s some serious talent on show here, too. As a multi-instrumentalist, Sunjay makes the most of every opportunity to play with the sound, with guitars moving from delicate finger-picking to the full-on swish of a rockin’ riff and pretty much everything in between. It gives the album a lovely sense of variety.
‘It Must Be Love’ is bright and catchy, while ‘It’s Late’ is an absolute bop with plenty of rock ’n’ roll swagger. ‘Take Out Some Insurance’ brings the blues, but for me, ‘Killing The Blues’ is the standout. Stripped back and beautifully restrained, it lets Sunjay’s stunning voice and the lyrics really shine.
