An album filled with clear rock influence, ‘Return of the Puppets’ by The Inklings is a fantastic display of the talent coming out of the local punk scene.
Nearly every track on this newest release thunders through with dirty thrashing riffs, accompanied with pounding drums and gritty basslines.
A melodic break from this formula comes halfway through the album in the track, ‘Hideaway’. Still implementing that classic guitar style at times, the vocals come through as much softer, assisted by the delicate string and wind floating through this track.
In massive contrast, the next track, ‘Candlelight’, is a challenger for the heaviest track on the entire release – but this stark pushback into thrashing punk-rock works and reminds the listener of whom they’re listening to perfectly.
Surprisingly, synths are quite common throughout the release, bringing a retro, nostalgic feel to tracks such as ‘Puppet’ and ‘Who They Gonna Make You Blame Today’.
With a perfect blend of classic punk rock and melodic guitar and wind instruments, ‘Return of the Puppets’ is a great listening choice.
