The alluring feminine vocals of the Newcastle-spawned three-piece alternative band, The Samphires, entwined with the heavy and grungy instrumentals, really hit hard in their latest EP release, ‘Ephemera’.
The dirty backing guitar mixed with gentle harmonies scream influence from artists like Pixies and Big Thief, bringing a delightful new sound to the North East music scene.
Despite the origins of the title in reference to the content of the lyrics – used or enjoyed for a short while – the tracks on this release are addictingly ethereal and demand to be listened to repeatedly.
There is an element of the turmoil of youthful relationships embedded in the lyrics of “Never gonna be your baby” presented with a delicately accusatory tone.
‘Coppers’ explores the anxieties and insistence of personal growth, with the repetitive lyrics “If hours feel like coppers weighing down jacket pockets,” positively becoming an earworm.
‘Pretty for You’ rounds out the EP with 2 minutes of brutal drums and beautifully poetic lyrics addressing inadequacy.
You can listen to the EP now on all major streaming platforms.
