Tonight’s gig is a bit of a different one: Beans, aka Jay McAllister, has a new band in town and three members are doing 20-minute support slots.
Memphis Gerald opens proceedings with his beautifully quirky take on folk music, King Killership has everyone tapping their feet with his honky tonk piano and bassist Bassie Gracie wows everyone with her empowering spoken word set.
The crowd are suitably warmed up when Beans and the band are joined by talented drummer, Abbi.
‘Back out on the Road’ is a very apt opener on this first night of the UK tour. Beans does two sets with the band and a solo acoustic section in between – but it’s the latter where the crowd really come to life, singing along to fan favourites ‘MDMAmazing’ and ‘The Chicken Song’.
Taking us on a journey through his extensive back catalogue and tracks from latest album ‘The Toothpaste and the Tube’, Beans sings about war, politics and love.
This was my first time seeing this extremely relevant and important artist and it won’t be the last.
