The collaboration between Baltic and the Schmidt Ocean Institute has given rise to a unique cultural and scientific event: Immersion – Artist-at-Sea Weekender. This programme brings together artists, researchers, and curious audiences to explore the ocean through a creative and interdisciplinary lens. At its heart lies a shared belief that art and science, when combined, can illuminate the hidden depths of our planet in ways neither could achieve alone.
The Schmidt Ocean Institute has long championed innovative approaches to oceanographic research, most notably through its Artist-at-Sea initiative. This programme places artists aboard the research vessel Falkor (too), where they accompany marine scientists on expeditions to witness exploration as it unfolds. While researchers map uncharted seabeds or document newly discovered species, artists observe, sketch, photograph, film, and reflect -capturing the emotion, wonder, and fragility of the deep sea. The result is a rich fusion of scientific insight and creative expression that extends public understanding far beyond data and diagrams.
Immersion brings this collaborative spirit to the public. The event showcases artworks inspired by these at-sea residencies, ranging from sound installations and projected imagery to sculptural forms and documentary pieces. Each work offers a unique perspective on the ocean’s mysteries, revealing landscapes few will ever see and species only recently encountered. Together, they form a compelling visual and sensory narrative – one that highlights the urgency of ocean conservation while celebrating the beauty of the marine world.
The weekender also features a dynamic programme of talks, discussions, and hands-on workshops. Visitors can hear firsthand from both scientists and artists about their experiences at sea, the challenges of ocean research, and the growing significance of creative communication in environmental advocacy. Workshop sessions invite participants to experiment with materials and techniques drawn from the residency process, creating space for dialogue and discovery.
Ultimately, Immersion – Artist-at-Sea Weekender serves as a reminder of the ocean’s vast influence on our lives and the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration in addressing global challenges. By merging scientific exploration with artistic interpretation, the event invites audiences to connect with the ocean not only intellectually but emotionally, encouraging a deeper appreciation and shared responsibility for the world beneath the waves.
The Ocean Weekender will take place on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th May from 10:00 to 18:00 at Baltic, Gateshead. Admission is free during gallery opening hours.
