John Robertson brings his riotous energy to The Stand in Newcastle on Tuesday 11th November with his show Plays With the Audience. This is no ordinary stand-up. For roughly 100 minutes, expect a hybrid of improv, chaotic crowd work, gamified comedy and spontaneous songs.
In the first half, Robertson plunges into his obsessions: video games, geek culture, internet niches and fringe fandoms. Nothing is too sacred or safe, as he teases, riffs and provokes with the passion of a superfan turned provocateur. In the second half, he leans into mayhem: running callbacks, launching songs, inviting audience interaction and dissolving structure in favour of wild unpredictability.
This is John Robertson’s first full-scale national stand-up tour. Though known for his cult show The Dark Room, here he casts off familiar structure and hands a chunk of control to the room itself. The result is electric, volatile, risky and occasionally brilliant.
Tickets, priced at £15.00 in advance, are available from thestand.co.uk.
