Leaning into classic Arctic Monkeys imagery, Tom Rosenthal brings his ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’ UK & Ireland tour to Newcastle on Thursday 17th September, revisiting his stand-up comedy roots. Perhaps best known for playing Jonny Goodman in Friday Night Dinner and Marcus Gallo in Plebs, Tom has enjoyed success as a comedy actor thanks to his sharp and impeccably timed humour.
Alongside his television career, Tom has written and performed three stand-up tours, the most recent being the critically acclaimed ‘Manhood’ in 2019. For this tour, London-born Tom reflects on growing up as the son of sports presenter Jim Rosenthal in a part-Jewish household, bringing his own style of ‘observational squawking’ to stories about family, identity and life.
Tom has also experienced clashes with his spirituality, or lack of it, which led him to question himself during the BBC’s Pilgrimage. During filming, Tom’s autistic traits were apparent to other cast members, eventually leading to a diagnosis that has provided him with some comfort as he learns to embrace his ‘somewhat chaotic’ mind.
Drawing on family anecdotes, personal experiences and the absurdities of everyday life, Tom intertwines sharp observations with darker subjects in a stand-up routine that promises plenty of laughs alongside moments of genuine reflection.
