The Billingham International Folklore Festival of World Dance returns from Saturday 9th to Sunday 17th August for a spectacular 60th anniversary jamboree, boasting a packed and vibrant line-up of concerts, workshops, and events from across the globe – more than you can shake a rhythm stick at.
Since its inception in 1965, the festival has brought cultural vibrancy and global community spirit to Billingham and the surrounding region, becoming a deeply rooted tradition that celebrates eclectic forms of dance, music, and fashion from all corners of the world. Both in the lead-up and throughout the event, the town becomes a hub of cross-cultural collaboration between dancers and choreographers. Hundreds of applications are submitted annually from dance companies, with just eight ultimately selected to perform in the gala.
Originally featuring only groups from Austria, Hungary, and Estonia, the festival has grown exponentially – now welcoming around 20,000 performers from over 90 countries. It stands as a testament to organic evolution, inclusivity, and cultural diversification. With support from Arts Council England, the 2010s saw the festival enter a new era, introducing contemporary and multi-cultural elements alongside traditional styles. This shift led to a wide array of innovative productions, encompassing numerous disciplines and embracing fusion, experimentation, and even incorporating elements of sport into the artistic programme.
The 2025 programme offers a variety of free events, Pay What You Decide opportunities, and ticketed shows. Key venues across Billingham include the Forum Theatre, Town Centre, Bandstand, and Festival Arena, while events also reach further afield to Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Darlington, and Preston Park Museum. Nations and territories set to showcase their heritage include Indonesia, Puerto Rico, Ukraine, Mexico, and Montenegro, among many others.
Flagship events include ‘Hopak!’, a dynamic Ukrainian dance performance at Middlesbrough Town Hall Crypt on Wednesday 13th August; the ‘World Dance Gala 2025’ at The Forum Theatre on Saturday 16th August, promising a spectacular international showcase of companies, choreography, costumes, and dance styles; and the ‘Live Traditional World Costume Exhibition’, visiting Billingham Town Centre on Saturday 9th August and Preston Park on Sunday 10th August.
Even this impressive list only scratches the surface – this year’s edition promises to be a true crown jewel of global culture, rhythm, and celebration.
