I’m poised and ready to scrutinise the latest offering from alt-rock trio Cane Rouge: a seven-track EP titled ‘Live At Little Buildings’, recorded at a music venue in their hometown of Newcastle.
Live albums can be precarious, particularly when poorly recorded, but this release sounds impressively strong. There is, of course, an unpolished edge to the vocals, but it enhances rather than detracts, lending the songs a raw emotional intensity that suits the material. Opening track ‘Rat Race’ immediately lays its cards on the table, delivering a full feast of relentless, high-energy drumming, intricate guitar work and menacing basslines. Lead vocalist and guitarist Ant performs in his natural regional accent, which adds authenticity and character.
‘All Or Nothing’ is an almighty thrasher, transporting the listener back to the carefree energy of the early noughties. ‘Lights Out’ stands as the EP’s pièce de résistance, beginning with a gentler acoustic introduction before being overtaken by powerful vocals and full-band instrumentation.
Closing track ‘Forget It’ introduces a grittier, more aggressive tone without losing the band’s cohesion or momentum. Overall, the EP captures the excitement and unpredictability of a live performance with impressive clarity.
You can listen to the EP now on all major streaming platforms.
